The Ice piled up along the shore near Travese City in West Bay, so I captured it on a 2' x 4' canvas

Oil painting of Grand Traverse West Bay, Gretchen Knoblock original! It was very very windy and about 56 degrees this day, but it was icy cold as the wind came across the bay. My hands froze as I stood in deep snow, painging this huge pile up of ice with waves crashing against it.

October's paintings

Port Oneida Farmstead
(22 x 28 inch original oil on canvas)

This week, I drove out to Port Oneida, just northeast of Glen Arbor, one mile north of M22, on Point Oneida Road, where I painted this Farmstead which is overlooking Lake Michigan's Sleeping Bear Bay with views to South Manitou Island. It is the Carsten-Burfiend Farmstead. This is part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Parkland. It was an Indian summer day, in the mid-70's. The milkweed in the foreground had turned a bright yellow. Signs that cooler days are on their way. National Lakeshore Link to Carsten-Burfiend Farm for the history lesson....

Port Oneida Rusty Barn painting
(5 x 7 original oil on linenboard)

This old rusty roof and outbuilding is part of the Carsten-Burfiend Farm on the East side of Point Oneida Road, north of M22 near Pyramid Point.

Chateau Chantal Old Cherry Orchard

Chateau Chantal Old Cherry Orchard painting
My Most Recent Work is "Chateau Chantal Old Cherry Orchard " This was painted at the north end of Chateau Chantal in a ravine between two vineyards mid-September 2008. These old cherry trees remain up on a hillside.

About me
Hello to all of my friends who have been patiently waiting for my latest paintings as well as an updated website. I finally got around to it. I have been working with a new chunkier style using a palette knife after I took part in a Pierre Bittar seminar up at Bay View Association in July '08. For those of you interested in painting yourselves, this is a fantastic seminar, very reasonably priced from a world reknowned French impressionist artist. You can sign up next year on the Bay View Association website. Read on (below) to find out dates for "Up North Art Fairs" and classes of interest. I recently took a beautiful hike with my sister-in-law Wendy, back into the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park south of Empire, MI, where we discovered purple meadows, overgrown apple orchards, and old architecture at the "Treat Farm". I am including maps when I can to "map" where I paint "Plein Air", so other artists may find some little known, and less traveled foot paths that lead to a treasure for the senses.

Art Classes
Northern Michigan offers a plethura of fine art workshops and events. In Traverse City, the Art Center is home to many watercolor, oil, and pastel classes. The Crystal Lake Art Center also is another great resource . If you're further north, Charlevoix's Crooked Tree Arts Center always has a special event taking place. There are also local artists who host their own workshops, like Melanie Parke and Richard Kooyman. So check these sites out and see if anything suits your fancy. NMC extended education is another place to go for learning about art, and wine, food, and just about anything else you'd want to experiment with while in Traverse City.
